Edison 'Squaretop' Standard with faults. £200

£200 without a reproducer- £250 with a sidearm 'C' (not pictured).

Early Standard- 1899 pattern with serial number in the 1500's. Very good mechanism and topworks. Poor case which has suffered as if it had been used as a sawhorse! See the next image. More available on request.

The case of the Squaretop Standard

This is the worst of how the case has suffered. As you see, it is the early two-clip model- before the clips were taken off and lost! Having said that the price is just over half that of a good example and the interior is near perfect.

Before you get too excited, this machine is far from perfect, but then the price is halved from that of a good one, too!

The machine is sold as seen, with no lid, but working well with a correct Graphophone reproducer and a genuine winding handle- albeit from a Graphophone AA- I should think- as it is somewhat shorter throw than one might expect.

There are a number of redundant holes in the back of the case base where some idiot tried to make a BKT out of the machine by adding incorrect back-brackts

An early '30'- the pattern without without a base surround moulding, but having the nickeled Diamond reproducer.

Although the fret is replaced, the motor runs very steadily and the sound produced is very clear.

I have just obtained this Edison Fireside and only realised when I got it home that it was a bit 'different'.

I have never previously seen a 'single-lined' Fireside without the usual characteristic double blue and gold parallel lining. The bedplate has clearly not been re-painted black and so I cannot imagine that the old lining had all been worn away or removed. The serial number is relatively early at 1481- has anyone else seen a similarly finished?

Good to look at- nevertheless this little machine has a sprinkling of 'niggle' faults. Still;- priced to sell!

Firstly and most importantly; someone has cut two need slots out of each end of the lid surround and one slot on one face. Mail me for detail picture of the lid. The winding-handle will have to be a reproduction and the bell plaque from the top-plate is missing (as usual!).

Otherwise a nicely plated and polished little machine. offered without horn to make a very compact parcel.

Close inspection of the horn reveals that it is not, in fact, a reproduction but a repainted original. The clue lying partly in the slight deformities under the paint in the metal of the back-crook and partly in the precision manufacture of the clip holding the horn halves together; the reproductions are not as finely made as the real thing.

Currently undergoing of a bit of work and adjustment- but I am showing this now as I am short of 'different' phonograph stock! The machine is in good general condition, with good polish but lacking Edison case transfer.

Although repeaters were also offered with Homes, the Triumph is truly the only machine with enough 'grunt' to operate the device successfully, and with its 28-minute running motor at least you can stand back and watch it doing its stuff for almost half an hour! A fascinating and rarely-encountered accessory.

Edison Amberola A-VI £450

The 1913 A-VI Amberola was a rare failure for Edison design. You can read more about it in George Frow's 'Guide to The Edison Phonograph'. Basically the revolutionary design with the motor largely above the bedplate included a brass gear which proved noisy. The substitute aluminium gear was quieter but still whined and so the model was dropped.

A handsome machine with chocolate, rather than black-painted, topworks, giving an altogether 'different' appearance.

The asking price for this example may seem low for such a rare beast, but there is a problem- the mahogany case has been completely stripped and waxed externally, leaving the machine working fine but cosmetically flawed. If you have polishing skills (the wood is well prepared) or are happy to see it the way it is (which is not bad) this may be one for you.

Pretty original machine with an original Edison 19" horn with paint 'distress'. A good machine with original Model 'K' reproducer and good polish. Interestingly there is catalogue suggestion that after 1908 the black 19" horn was offered with Gems, Standards, Homes and Firesides, despite the idea that all Firesides came with red horns as 'outfits'.

You may buy the machine alone without horn for £450 if you prefer.

Original Edison 10-panel 32-inch horn in good (old) paint. Strictly appropriate for Standards made after 1905. For Model A and earlier, Victorian, Standards a long brass horn would be more correctly in period.
